Message from the Chairperson Zero waste, reduction, reuse, recycling, resource recovery, treatment and disposal - these are the words we are now hearing instead of "rubbish". Residents passionately push for more kerbside recycling, climate change ensures we count and capture methane emissions, and the changing oil prices force reappraisal of waste collection options. We are a networking and information forum with members from 8 local authorities, Greater Wellington, Ministry for the Environment and from industry. Our vision is a region where far less waste goes to landfill and where innovative design, manufacturing and refurbishing of products, produce local jobs. The Wellington Region is well poised to take a lead with economic development, environmental protection to creatively work together. Co-operation between local authorities is vital and this forum plays an important part in the keeping channels of communication open between local authorities, businesses, communities and central government agencies. We welcome the new territory that the Waste Management Act and associated levies and mechanisms open up, and look forward to work as a region with our Regional Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.
